In 1950, the Vancouver Jaycee Little League was formed along with a league in Sydney, Nova Scotia, as Little League Baseball began to expand outside of the United States for the first time. Little League Baseball has been played in Canada since 1951. In 1953, Little Mountain Little League of Vancouver advanced to the World Series as representative of the Western Region.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1a62a65 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"1a62a65\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">1953<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f9a6975 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"f9a6975\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); text-align: var(--text-align); font-size: 19px;\">In 1953, Little League baseball in Victoria was expanded by four teams with the creation of a second league \u2014 the American League \u2014 to play alongside the existing four teams of the National League at Little League Park at Hillside Avenue and Cook Street. This event was huge for Oak Bay kids as the American League\u2019s four new teams opened the door to pre-teen boys living outside City limits. Approximately 500 leagues now operate in Canada, making it the second-largest country in Little League participation.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-88c00b2 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"88c00b2\" data-element_type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-65af8b0 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"65af8b0\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 20px;\">These four new teams, sponsored by and named after service organizations, were the Kinsmen, Lions, Elks and Oak Bay Kiwanis. On May 17, 1953, the first games, a double header, were played at the new \u201cVictoria Jaycee Little League.\u201d The ball park wasn\u2019t even finished \u2013 there was no grass on the field! But that didn\u2019t stop the 1,500 spectators from coming out to support the little leaguers.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); text-align: var(--text-align); font-size: 20px;\">In 1953 Little Mountain Little League, Vancouver, B.C. advanced to the World Series as representative of the Western Region. This is also the year that eventual Canadian Baseball of Fame inductee Doug Hudlin umpires his first game at the park.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b623b18 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"b623b18\" data-element_type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3c5cb33 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"3c5cb33\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">1954<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-fee620e elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"fee620e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 20px;\">In 1954, the \u201cVictoria Jaycee Little League\u201d was renamed as \u201cVictoria National Little League\u201d to accommodate an expansion by the Jaycees to form another four teams in a separate \u201cAmerican\u201d Little League.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 20px;\">Victoria now had two leagues just like the MLB and grass was finally on the field! Both leagues played out of the same ball park until the American Little League moved to their own ball park in Saanich.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-559df76 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"559df76\" data-element_type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-53afaa3 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"53afaa3\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">1957<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-dc2ce1b elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"dc2ce1b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 20px;\">At the 1957 International Congress in Houston, Texas, Mr. Peter J. McGovern, President &amp; Chairman of the Board of Directors, Little League Baseball , Inc., announced the appointment of Commander John P. Singleton R.C.N. (Retired) as Director General of Little League Baseball Canada, with an office in Ottawa, Ontario.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); text-align: var(--text-align); font-size: 20px;\">Today there are over 30 leagues organized into six districts across the province, including charters on Vancouver Island, in interior British Columbia, and across the Vancouver metro area. Champions from these six districts, along with a host league, compete in a provincial tournament that determines British Columbia\u2019s representative at the Canadian Region tournament. The Canadian champion then advances to the Little League World Series.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 20px;\">Thirty British Columbia leagues have reached the Little League World Series, including the province\u2019s most recent qualifier, Little Mountain Little League in 2022. Doug was a long serving employee of the City and was chosen as the first non-American umpire &#8211; and the only Black non-American umpire &#8211; to work the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, and did so twice.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Doug was inducted into the Greater Victoria Sports Hall of Fame, the BC Baseball Umpires Association Hall of Fame, and has been recognized at National Little League Park and the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame.
